6 June 1944. A titanic fleet launched an assault on the beaches of Normandy. Objective: to liberate Europe from Hitler's yoke. Drawing on the lessons learned from the Dieppe raid in August 1942, the mission was a spectacular success.

  02 The Great Assault

  On 6 June 1944, the Allied armada launched an assault on the Normandy coast. After a day of unrest, the Normandy coastline was in the hands of the Allies. The operation was repeated in Provence, and caught the Germans in a vice-like grip.
